As Dick Russell is dedicated to the Gray Whales, so too is Sarah James, Gwitch'in elder from the North of Alaska, frequent guest of the show, dedicated to protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge,which the Gwitch'in call "the birthplace of all life." What is it in the human sociopathic disregard for life that is so relentless in its desire to destroy places of birthing (clubbing 350,000 baby seals, no longer having even the thinnest of economic incentives etc. and this hunting of whales.etc.) Whatever it is - we want to compost it, die to it , lest we die from it. Die to all in the way of democratic animism. (Take back the term "pro-life".) On Thursday, a proposal will be unveiled that would legalize commercial whale hunting for the first time in 24 years. The fate of the proposal will be determined largely by the world's immediate reactions to it—and according to insiders, many governments are planning to stand aside and allow commercial whaling to resume. An outcry is needed now to ensure they stand strong to save the whales. Avaaz has launched a last-moment petition to show our leaders their people want to protect whales, not hunt, kill, and sell them. The petition will be sent to the delegates to the International Whaling Commission every time we raise another 100,000 signatures—sign the petition here. A strong international consensus has opposed whaling for decades—but for just as long, Japan, Norway, and Iceland have continued to hunt whales, ignoring the global ban on whaling or exploiting a loophole by claiming their expeditions were "scientific research." Now they could be rewarded by a "compromise" proposal, in which their commercial whaling would be made legal. Worse still, a number of other countries are watching the process closely—with rumored plans to start their own whaling programs if the proposal goes through. If Japan, Norway, and Iceland can hunt whales and sell their meat, others will ask "if them, why not us?" It's time to save the whales—again. Oppose the legalization of commercial whale hunting. Forty years ago, whales were on the brink of extinction. But thanks to a global social movement, the world banned commercial whaling in 1986. The ban is one of the environmental movement's great triumphs. Today, whales still face many threats: not just the whalers' harpoons, but also climate change, destruction of ecosystems by overfishing and pollution, and nets intended for other fish. A renewed wave of commercial whaling could devastate these extraordinarily intelligent and social cousins of humanity. This is no time to move backwards. For our live Brer Rabbit jump through the doorway into 2009, Caroline welcomes inspirational embodiment of Compassionate Trickster,Tim DeChristopher, who on December 19th, as a Trickster Agent of the CommonWealth, and supported by all the flora and fauna of this planet, saw the open door of opportunity and jumped right through to disrupt the BLM oil and gas auction by bidding against participating oil & gas companies. He ended up "winning" the leases for 22,500 acres of beautiful land near Moab. You can find more details at www.bidder70.org. His actions have struck an inspirational resonant chord of support. Tim writes: "In addition to the moving effect on me, this support has also opened up the real possibility of paying off the leases which I "won". The initial payment on this, required to secure the land, is around $45,000. After a good deal of struggling over this choice, I have decided to raise the money to secure the leases. With much advice from my legal team, it has become clear to me that making the down payment on the leases is the best way to protect the land until we can restore open, transparent and democratic procedures for determining the fate of valuable public lands.
