What is it in the human sociopathic disregard for life that is so relentless in its desire to destroy places of birthing (clubbing 350,000 baby seals, no longer having even the thinnest of economic incentives etc. and this hunting of whales.etc.) Whatever it is - we want to compost it, die to it , lest we die from it. On Thursday, a proposal will be unveiled that would legalize commercial whale hunting for the first time in 24 years.

The fate of the proposal will be determined largely by the world's immediate reactions to it—and according to insiders, many governments are planning to stand aside and allow commercial whaling to resume. An outcry is needed now to ensure they stand strong to save the whales.

Avaaz has launched a last-moment petition to show our leaders their people want to protect whales, not hunt, kill, and sell them. The petition will be sent to the delegates to the International Whaling Commission every time we raise another 100,000 signatures—sign the petition here.

A strong international consensus has opposed whaling for decades—but for just as long, Japan, Norway, and Iceland have continued to hunt whales, ignoring the global ban on whaling or exploiting a loophole by claiming their expeditions were "scientific research." Now they could be rewarded by a "compromise" proposal, in which their commercial whaling would be made legal.

Worse still, a number of other countries are watching the process closely—with rumored plans to start their own whaling programs if the proposal goes through. If Japan, Norway, and Iceland can hunt whales and sell their meat, others will ask "if them, why not us?"

It's time to save the whales—again. Oppose the legalization of commercial whale hunting.

Forty years ago, whales were on the brink of extinction. But thanks to a global social movement, the world banned commercial whaling in 1986. The ban is one of the environmental movement's great triumphs.

Today, whales still face many threats: not just the whalers' harpoons, but also climate change, destruction of ecosystems by overfishing and pollution, and nets intended for other fish. A renewed wave of commercial whaling could devastate these extraordinarily intelligent and social cousins of humanity. This is no time to move backwards.

In a wide-reaching collaboration, that pulled in architects, students and volunteers from all over the United States, the new museum was designed and built in the Summer of 2006. The participants labored in the long Louisiana summer, and the physical signs of construction in progress on Tupelo Street attracted the attention of out of town visitors, as well as displaced New Orleanians returning to tour their own home town. As was Ronald Lewis’ intention, the rebuilding of the museum on Tupelo Street contributed to the voices calling for neighbors to come home.

Since 2006, the museum has become an important gathering place for scholars, activists, students, neighbors, and volunteers to talk about the history and culture of the Lower Nine, and to discuss the rebuilding of New Orleans. The museum has also hosted numerous meetings, workshops, and gatherings for people who are working to make things happen in New Orleans. Visitors to the House of Dance and Feathers experience the power of self-representation and the value of cultural exchange. Mr. Lewis is currently working with Rachel Breunlin and the Neighborhood Story Project to produce a museum catalogue. In his museum tours and public talks, Mr. Lewis speaks eloquently about the social significance of place, family, and cultural traditions in community-building, and he has been an outspoken advocate for a resident-led rebuilding of the Lower Ninth Ward.

BBC America is airing a remarkably apt political drama "The State Within" in three parts,dealing with: state-staged terrorism in service to the obscene wedding of American and British foreign policy, servicing expedient corporate profit; using the alleged "war on terror" with private militias to back up repressive regimes, whose atrocities would make Saddam blush. A key character of troubled principle is the British Ambassador to Tyrgyzstan, who has resigned in protest against the appalling policies of Great Britain and America, that must be fully revealed and discredited. The character was clearly based on Craig Murray who resigned his post as British Ambassador to Uzbekistan, and who is Caroline's guest today to tell us why he resigned, and why we all should care.
